Fresh Apple Donuts recipe from Mountain View Country Market in Chuckey,TNFresh Apple Donuts

5 c. flour
4 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. mace
1/4 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
3 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. grated raw apples
1/2 c. buttermilk

Mix the first seven ingredients and set aside. Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and beat until smooth. Add rest of ingredients to creamed mixture, mix well. Add flour mixture, 1 cup at a time, beating until smooth after each addition. Turn out onto a floured surface. Roll to 1/2 inch thickness. Use more flour for handling dough if necessary. Cut out to desired shape. Heat oil 2 inches deep. Gently drop in 3 or 4 at a time. Fry 1 minute on each side. Note: You can make them as sticks too. You can dip them in glaze, roll them in cinnamon sugar mixture or sprinkle with powdered sugar if desired.
